5 More Book Opinions
Here’s another few definitely-not-reviews that absolutely no one asked for 🙃 I’m in a bad mood today thanks to some shitty Blue Dog customers, so let’s go through some books that I didn’t love.
Bones & All - Camille DeAngelis
I actually didn’t mind this book. Not as much as my dad did. He borrowed it from the library after I said I was interested in it, gave it a read before handing it over with a warning—“there’s no love in this book, darlin’” #iykyk
Maybe that’s why I wasn’t too bothered by the loveless storyline or the creepy characters. The only thing I found myself skipping over with a slight frustration, was the long-ass descriptions of the environments. It was as though she was trying to get the word count up (no judgement, been there) and once I realised the whole page of adjectives used to paint a picture of the town the MC was only passing through had no real affect on the story, I found myself reading ahead until I came back to the plot or dialogue. I also, didn’t love the vegan guilt trip at the end—as though eating a burger is as bad as eating your teenage crush? Okay, babe.
I still haven’t seen the movie either because I’m poor, so make sure you go buy my book so I can begin to enjoy the simple pleasures of watching cannibal movies in the cinema once again 🫶🏼
Ugly Love - Colleen Hoover
To be clear, I loved this damn book. Ugly Love made me ugly cry. But there was one aspect of it that drove me insane the entire time: he said he just wanted it to be sex, woman! Now, I totally understand that it all worked out in the end and it was probably a good thing that she was so inconsiderately persistent towards the relationship. But I cannot staaand when books and movies push the “he only wants a physical thing, but she knows she can make him fall in love” plot 🤮 It’s not healthy. People in real life set clear boundaries like that and—because of stories like this—lines get blurred with delusion.
I used to have a friend who told us about a girl he was seeing. His actual words were: “she says she only wants to fuck around, but I know what girls really want” and became irrationally mad when she broke it off, after he confessed his love???
In my opinion, as soon as Tate started to get feelings for Miles, she should have told him or bounced, and it really irritated me that she didn’t. But anyway, then it wouldn’t have been much of a story or a happy ending, I guess, so… I’ll shut up about it.
Beach Read - Emily Henry
I’m so fucking sorry. I just simply do not understand the hype for this book. It took me three months to read this and I was practically forcing myself to get through it in the end. I’ve seen a couple of other reviews complaining that “nothing happens in this book” and, while I’ve thoroughly enjoyed other books where there is next to no climax or drama, I have to agree. I just didn’t understand where the main characters’ chemistry was meant to be coming from? Was it just because they were both hot and lived next door to each other? Why was she so shitty at her dad about something that her mum seemed to be getting over? Why didn’t she just read the friggin’ envelope earlier? I dunno, man, but this just wasn’t my cup of tea despite the praise I saw for it online.
Unnecessary Drama - Nina Kenwood
This is another one that I actually loved and powered through in two days. But here’s my question: why tf are the quotation marks mixed up?***** Like, Nina Kenwood (or her editor??) used single quotes to denote direct speech and double quotes to enclose the quotes within a quote. It drove my brain insane and there were so many times when I got confused about dialogue—which probably says more about my reading ability than anything else??? But anyway, apart from that and the fact that the main character’s chronic anxiety resonated with me a little too deeply for my liking, I enjoyed the read, the characters and the story.
***** I have since found out that in Australia, we can swap it over as long as consistency is maintained 🫠
Things We Never Got Over - Lucy Score
This book was cute and the characters were amazing and the smut was great and the story was flowin’. I genuinely rate it five stars. But let me tell you about one teeny detail I did not love about this book. Or maybe show you. These are some of the characters’ names: Knox, Nash, Liza J, Waylay, Grave, Justice, Wraith, Gibbons, Sloane, Silver, Yolanda, Warner, Fiasco, Tanner, Grim, Winona, Lucian, Vernon, Stasia, Browder, Wylie, Neecey, Blaze, Agatha, Duke - and that’s just off the top of my head. I adore a unique and catchy name as much as the next author, but (call it nitpicking if you must) I just thought this was way too many, especially for side characters.
Again, maybe that says more about me than the book itself (i.e. I’m a boring, basic bitch) and I definitely don’t want it to deter anyone from a great read with a sexy af romance ❤️🔥
Let me know if there are any books you think I would love, but remember, I’ll make fun of you forever if you’re wrong 😊
